17 Best May Holiday Destinations From the UK (2026 Guide)

May might just be my favourite month to escape the UK. The weather back home is finally showing signs of life, but you know how it goes - one glorious day followed by three days of drizzle that makes you question everything. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean is hitting that perfect sweet spot: properly warm (25-30°C), minimal crowds, and shoulder-season prices that won't make you weep.

I've spent the last few years treating May as my annual "reward yourself for surviving British winter" month, and I've learned which destinations consistently deliver. Not the "might be warm, might need a jacket" kind of warm - I mean guaranteed sunshine, t-shirt weather from breakfast onwards.

This guide covers 17 destinations I've personally visited in May, organised by flight time from the UK. Whether you want to be on a beach by lunchtime or need something more adventurous, there's something here for every type of traveller. For shorter flights, check out our guide to 2-hour flights from the UK.

Why May Is Actually the Best Month to Travel From the UK

Before diving into destinations, here's why I keep coming back to May for my biggest trips of the year:

FactorMay RatingWhy It Matters
Prices🟢 25-35% cheaper than July/AugustBank holidays excluded, otherwise bargain territory
Crowds🟢 Minimal to moderateEuropeans in school, Americans waiting for summer
Weather🟢 Goldilocks zone24-32°C most places - warm but not oppressive
Daylight🟢 Long days14+ hours of usable daylight in Mediterranean
Sea temperature🟢 Finally swimmableEastern Med hits 22-24°C - properly pleasant
What's open🟢 EverythingSummer season started, full services running

The one caveat: early May bank holidays (May 4th and 25th in 2026) do see price spikes and more crowds. If you can travel mid-May (roughly 10th-20th), you'll hit the absolute sweet spot. For a fuller long-weekend strategy, see our bank holiday getaways 2026 guide.

Pro tip: May is when the eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Cyprus, Crete, Rhodes) starts to properly outperform the western Med. If beach swimming is a priority, go east.

Under 3 Hours: Quick May Escapes

1. Seville, Spain

Flight time: 2h 45m from London Gatwick | May temp: 28°C

I went to Seville in mid-May last year and it was absolutely perfect. Hot enough to feel like proper summer (we're talking 28-30°C), but not the brutal 40°C+ that hits in July and August. The city has this energy in May - everyone's out, the orange trees are in bloom, and you can actually enjoy the outdoor terraces without melting.

What makes May special here:

  • Feria de Abril sometimes extends into early May - if you catch it, it's spectacular
  • Perfect walking weather - 25-28°C vs 40°C+ in summer
  • No siesta requirements - you can actually explore 2pm-5pm without dying
  • Rooftop bars are open - but not yet sardine-packed
  • My May Seville highlights:

  • Morning: Alcázar (go at opening, 9:30am - the gardens are stunning in spring)
  • Afternoon: Get lost in Santa Cruz, stop for cold gazpacho and a caña
  • Evening: Sunset drinks at Hotel Doña María rooftop, then tapas crawl in Triana
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Hotel Amadeus (mid-range, beautiful courtyard, near everything)

💰 Budget: £80-120/night for decent hotel, £30-50/day food & drinks

    2. Barcelona, Spain

Flight time: 2h 10m from most UK airports | May temp: 22°C

Barcelona in May is genuinely delightful - for a detailed exploration, see our 3 days in Barcelona itinerary. It's - warm enough for the beach but cool enough to actually enjoy Gaudí without the summer crush. The city doesn't hit true "beach weather" until late May (sea is still 17-18°C early month), but that's actually a plus if you're there for culture, food, and nightlife.

    What makes May special here:

  • Beaches are quiet - locals say the season doesn't really start until Sant Joan (June 23)
  • Park Güell is bearable - summer crowds are brutal, May is manageable
  • La Boqueria isn't packed - you can actually browse instead of being pushed through
  • Terrace season - every plaza comes alive
  • My Barcelona May strategy:

  • Stay in Gràcia or Poble Sec (local vibes, cheaper, excellent food scene)
  • Do Sagrada Família at 9am (first entry, book weeks ahead)
  • Save beaches for late May or pair with evening vermut
  • Eat late (dinner reservations 9pm, like locals)
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Hotel Brummell (Poble Sec, pool, excellent rooftop)

💰 Budget: £100-150/night for good hotel, £40-60/day food & drinks

    3. Amalfi Coast, Italy

    Flight time: 2h 30m to Naples + 1h transfer | May temp: 24°C

The Amalfi Coast in May is what the Instagram photos promise but summer crowds destroy. I've done it in both May and August - trust me, May wins by a landslide. You can actually walk the paths without queueing, get reservations at good restaurants, and the limoncello tastes the same but costs 30% less.

    What makes May special here:

  • Lemon season - the groves are heavy with fruit, everything is fresh
  • Path of the Gods is hikeable - summer heat makes it genuinely dangerous
  • You can get restaurant reservations - summer requires booking months ahead
  • Ferry schedules are running - but boats aren't packed to sinking point
  • My Amalfi May itinerary:

  • Base yourself in Praiano or Atrani (cheaper, more authentic than Positano)
  • Take the 8am ferry from Amalfi to Capri - you'll have 2 hours before crowds arrive
  • Hike Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) starting from Bomerano at 7am
  • Dinner at Lo Smeraldino in Praiano (try the local catch with lemon butter)
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Hotel Margherita (Praiano, family-run, stunning views, half the price of Positano)

💰 Budget: £150-200/night for hotels, £60-80/day food & drinks (it's expensive, but May helps)

    4. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Flight time: 2h 30m from London | May temp: 23°C

Dubrovnik has become a victim of its own success (thanks, Game of Thrones), but May is still the month where you can actually enjoy it. The cruise ships are coming, but not yet in full summer assault mode. The Old Town is walkable, the beaches are quiet, and you can get sunset drinks at Buža Bar without a 2-hour wait.

    What makes May special here:

  • Cruise ship numbers: 1-2/day in May vs 4-6/day in summer
  • Swimming is viable - sea hits 19-20°C by late May (wetsuit optional)
  • Day trips are peaceful - Elafiti Islands, Lokrum feel like your own discovery
  • Walls walk isn't torture - 23°C vs 35°C makes a huge difference on 2km of stone walls
  • My Dubrovnik May approach:

  • Stay outside Old Town walls (Lapad, Gruž) - half the price, short bus ride
  • Do the walls walk at opening (8am) - it's still busy but manageable
  • Take the kayak trip to Lokrum for half the city-break crowds
  • Eat in Gruž (local fish, local prices, no tourist markup)
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Villa Adriatica (Lapad, pool, 10-minute bus to Old Town)

    💰 Budget: £80-120/night for hotel, £35-50/day food & drinks

    5. Tuscany, Italy

Flight time: 2h 15m to Pisa or Florence | May temp: 24°C

May in Tuscany is genuinely magical - and I don't use that word lightly. The countryside is this impossibly green (it goes brown by July), the poppies are blooming, and the hilltop towns have that golden-hour glow all day long. This is when those travel magazine photos were taken.

    What makes May special here:

  • Everything is GREEN - this fades fast once summer heat hits
  • Poppy season - mid-May brings those iconic red-dotted fields
  • Wine country isn't packed - you can actually talk to winemakers
  • Outdoor dining - warm evenings, no mosquitoes yet
  • My Tuscany May road trip:

  • Fly to Pisa, pick up a car immediately (you need wheels here)
  • Base 1: San Gimignano (2 nights, medieval towers, incredible wine)
  • Base 2: Val d'Orcia (2 nights - Pienza or Montepulciano for that rolling hills landscape)
  • Day trip: Siena (skip Florence in May - save it for shoulder season when it's cooler)
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Agriturismo Cretaiole (Val d'Orcia, working farm, best views I've ever woken up to)

💰 Budget: £100-150/night for agriturismo, £50-70/day food, wine & activities

3-4 Hours: The Mediterranean Sweet Spot

    6. Malta

Flight time: 3h 15m from London | May temp: 25°C

Malta punches way above its weight for a tiny island. In May, you get reliable sunshine, swimmable seas (just about - 19°C takes some commitment), and a genuinely fascinating mix of ancient history and Mediterranean charm. Plus it's English-speaking, which removes a lot of travel friction.

    What makes May special here:

  • Festa season begins - village festivals every weekend, incredible atmosphere
  • Diving visibility peaks - water clarity is exceptional before summer plankton
  • Comino Blue Lagoon is still quiet - summer brings day-trip hell
  • Valletta is walkable - 25°C vs 35°C makes a huge difference in a stone city
  • My Malta May approach:

  • Base in Sliema or St Julian's (Valletta is beautiful but limited nightlife/dining)
  • Do Gozo as a day trip (ferry from Ċirkewwa, hire a car on the island)
  • Blue Lagoon boat trip - but go for 7am departure to beat crowds
  • Mdina at sunset (the "Silent City" is genuinely magical at golden hour)
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Hotel Valentina (St Julian's, pool, walking distance to everything)

    💰 Budget: £80-120/night for hotel, £30-45/day food & drinks

    7. Marrakech, Morocco

Flight time: 3h 30m from London | May temp: 29°C

May in Marrakech is that Goldilocks window - properly hot (28-32°C) but not the 45°C+ that makes summer visits genuinely miserable. The riads are at their most beautiful with rooftop plunge pools actually being usable, and the souks are busy but not shoulder-to-shoulder.

    What makes May special here:

  • Temperature is perfect - hot enough to feel exotic, cool enough to explore
  • Rooftop dining comes alive - those Instagram-perfect meals are actually comfortable
  • Day trips are viable - Atlas Mountains, Essaouira, without heat exhaustion
  • Gardens are lush - Majorelle Garden especially is peak beautiful
  • My Marrakech May strategy:

  • Stay in the Medina (riads start around £60-80/night in May)
  • Souks in the morning (9-11am before peak heat)
  • Pool and rooftop from 12-4pm
  • Djemaa el-Fna at sunset (the food stalls, the chaos, the energy)
  • Day trip to Essaouira for coastal cool-down (3 hours each way, worth it)
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Riad Yasmine (that famous green pool, book months ahead)

    💰 Budget: £60-100/night for riad, £20-35/day food & drinks

    8. Madeira

Flight time: 3h 45m from London | May temp: 22°C

Madeira is criminally underrated, especially for UK travellers. May brings reliable sunshine, subtropical warmth without humidity, and that incredible levada walking network at its best. It's not a beach destination (the beaches are pretty average), but for hiking, food, wine, and natural beauty? It's exceptional.

    What makes May special here:

  • Flower Festival - usually late April/early May, Funchal goes bloom-crazy
  • Levada walking is perfect - trails aren't muddy, waterfalls are flowing
  • Whale/dolphin watching peaks - May through September is best
  • Hotel prices are reasonable - peak summer brings cruise crowds
  • My Madeira May highlights:

  • Levada do Caldeirão Verde (the classic walk, genuinely stunning)
  • Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal (passion fruit shots with the vendors)
  • Cable car to Monte + toboggan ride down (tourist trap? Yes. Fun? Also yes)
  • Sunset dinner in Câmara de Lobos (Churchill's favourite view)
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Quinta da Casa Branca (boutique, gardens, just outside Funchal)

    💰 Budget: £90-140/night for hotel, £35-50/day food & drinks

    9. Corfu, Greece

Flight time: 3h 10m from London | May temp: 24°C

Corfu is one of the greenest Greek islands (it actually gets rain, unlike Cyclades), and May is when it looks its absolute best. The Venetian-influenced Old Town is UNESCO-listed, the beaches are empty, and the water is getting properly warm (20°C by late May).

    What makes May special here:

  • Everything is green - summer browns things out
  • Old Town is peaceful - summer cruise traffic is brutal
  • Beach bars are open - but you can actually get a lounger
  • Authentic village life - join Greeks celebrating name days and spring festivals
  • My Corfu May approach:

  • Stay in Old Town for culture (but no beaches within walking distance)
  • Or stay in Paleokastritsa for beaches + monastery + that famous scenery
  • Rent a car - the island is big enough to need wheels
  • Northeast coast (Kassiopi, Kalami) for the most reliable sunshine
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Sierra Corfu (north coast, adults-only, excellent pool)

    💰 Budget: £80-130/night for hotel, £35-50/day food & drinks

    10. Algarve, Portugal

Flight time: 2h 45m from most UK airports | May temp: 23°C

The Algarve is reliable, affordable, and genuinely beautiful - and May is when you get summer vibes without summer prices or crowds. The sea is still fresh (17-18°C - wetsuit recommended for longer swims), but the air is warm and the beaches are yours.

    What makes May special here:

  • Beaches are empty - we're talking literally choose any spot
  • Golf is perfect - 23°C vs 35°C makes a huge difference on 18 holes
  • Restaurant reservations easy - summer requires planning
  • Lagos Old Town is walkable - without tourist crush
  • My Algarve May strategy:

  • Stay in Lagos (best Old Town vibes) or Carvoeiro (quieter, more upmarket)
  • Skip Albufeira unless you specifically want nightlife
  • Boat trip to Benagil Cave - but go early morning for best light
  • Explore beyond the beaches: Silves castle, Monchique mountains, wine routes
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Vivenda Miranda (Lagos, cliffside, incredible views, pool)

    💰 Budget: £80-120/night for hotel, £30-45/day food & drinks

    4-5 Hours: Guaranteed Sun Territory

    11. Crete, Greece

Flight time: 4h 00m from London | May temp: 25°C

Crete is where I send people who want "Greek island" but also want to actually do things beyond sitting on a beach. For more Greek inspiration, explore our hidden gems in Greece guide. It's huge (fourth-largest Mediterranean island), so there's genuine variety: ancient Minoan ruins, mountain villages, gorge hikes, and yes, excellent beaches.

    What makes May special here:

  • Samaria Gorge opens May 1st - freshly accessible, waterfalls flowing
  • Wildflower season - the landscape is impossibly colourful
  • Beach swimming starts - 21°C sea is properly pleasant
  • Cretan food peaks - fresh horta (wild greens), new season olive oil
  • My Crete May itinerary:

  • Base 1: Chania (3 nights, Venetian harbour, excellent food scene)
  • Base 2: Elounda/Agios Nikolaos (3 nights, beaches, Spinalonga day trip)
  • Day trip: Samaria Gorge (start early, it's 16km but unforgettable)
  • Don't skip: a village lunch in the mountains (Loutro accessible only by boat or foot)
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Hotel Porto Veneziano (Chania, harbour views, pool)

    💰 Budget: £80-120/night for hotel, £30-45/day food & drinks

    12. Cyprus (Paphos & Limassol)

Flight time: 4h 30m from London | May temp: 27°C

Cyprus in May is where you go when you want guaranteed beach weather without flying 8 hours. The island heats up faster than mainland Greece, so by May you're looking at 27-28°C air and 22°C seas - that's proper swimming weather.

    What makes May special here:

  • Sea temperature peaks earlier - eastern Med advantage
  • Paphos archaeological sites aren't brutal - summer heat makes them tough
  • Beach clubs open - but not yet at capacity
  • Troodos Mountains are accessible - before summer fire closures
  • My Cyprus May approach:

  • Base in Paphos for archaeology + beaches
  • Or Limassol for more nightlife and restaurant options
  • Rent a car - distances are bigger than you'd expect
  • Don't miss: Avakas Gorge hike, Cape Greco, a mountain village lunch in Troodos
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Almyra (Paphos, design hotel, pool, excellent restaurant)

    💰 Budget: £100-150/night for hotel, £35-50/day food & drinks

    13. Turkish Riviera (Bodrum, Fethiye, Kaş)

Flight time: 4h 00m to Dalaman or Bodrum | May temp: 28°C

The Turkish coast offers incredible value for money and some of the most dramatic scenery in the Mediterranean. May is ideal - properly hot (28°C+), sea is warm (23°C), but the summer charter-flight invasion hasn't started. This is when Turkey feels sophisticated rather than package-holiday.

    What makes May special here:

  • Hot but not oppressive - 28°C vs 38°C+ in July
  • Gulet sailing is perfect - calm seas, warm temps
  • Prices are excellent - Turkey remains incredible value
  • Ancient sites are bearable - Ephesus in summer is genuinely punishing
  • My Turkish Riviera picks:

  • Kaş for sophisticated, boutique, excellent diving
  • Fethiye for Ölüdeniz, boat trips, backpacker vibes
  • Bodrum for nightlife, beach clubs, castle-town charm
  • Must-do: Saklikent Gorge, Blue Lagoon (not the Malta one), Butterfly Valley
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Maison Notos (Kaş, boutique, rooftop pool, sea views)

    💰 Budget: £60-100/night for hotel, £25-40/day food & drinks

    14. Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote)

Flight time: 4h 15m from London | May temp: 25°C

The Canaries are the UK's reliable backup plan - when everywhere else might be iffy, the Canaries deliver. May brings 25°C temperatures, zero rain days (basically), and none of the summer school-holiday crowds.

    What makes May special here:

  • Zero rain - genuinely, May averages 0-1 rain days
  • No school holiday crowds - families wait for summer
  • Perfect hiking weather - Tenerife's Teide, Lanzarote's volcanoes
  • Whale watching continues - resident pilot whales year-round
  • My Canaries May recommendations:

  • Tenerife: North for green, south for beaches, Teide for adventure
  • Gran Canaria: Maspalomas dunes, Tejeda mountain village, Las Palmas culture
  • Lanzarote: Timanfaya volcanoes, wine region, César Manrique architecture
  • La Palma: For serious hikers - Caldera de Taburiente is spectacular
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora (Tenerife south, infinity pools, worth the splurge)

    💰 Budget: £100-160/night for hotel, £35-50/day food & drinks

    15. Rhodes, Greece

Flight time: 4h 15m from London | May temp: 26°C

Rhodes is the Goldilocks Greek island for many UK travellers - big enough to have variety, small enough to explore in a week, and warm earlier than most other options. The medieval Old Town is spectacular, the beaches are diverse, and the sea is actually swimmable.

    What makes May special here:

  • Old Town isn't packed - summer cruise crowds are intense
  • Swimming starts properly - 21°C sea by mid-May
  • Lindos is manageable - the donkey queues get brutal in summer
  • All the restaurants/bars are open - season is in full swing
  • My Rhodes May approach:

  • Split time: Old Town (history, food, nightlife) + beach area (Faliraki area, or go south to Pefkos/Lindos for upmarket)
  • Hire a car for one day - drive the coast road south to Prasonisi
  • Lindos at sunset (avoid midday - the acropolis climb is shadeless)
  • The island's interior has excellent tavernas the coast tourists miss
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Spirit of the Knights (Rhodes Old Town, boutique, stunning building)

    💰 Budget: £80-130/night for hotel, £30-45/day food & drinks

    16. Sardinia, Italy

Flight time: 2h 30m to Cagliari or Olbia | May temp: 24°C

Sardinia is Italy's best-kept-ish secret - Caribbean-quality beaches attached to an Italian island with all the food, wine, and culture that implies. May is shoulder season, so you get the beaches (mostly) to yourself and the famous Costa Smeralda without the famous Costa Smeralda prices.

    What makes May special here:

  • Beach season starts - but you're not fighting for a spot
  • Inland Sardinia blooms - the interior is wildflower spectacular
  • Restaurant availability - summer reservations are impossible
  • Diving is excellent - visibility peaks before summer plankton
  • My Sardinia May strategy:

  • North (Costa Smeralda, Palau, La Maddalena) for best beaches
  • South (Cagliari, Villasimius) for culture + beaches combined
  • Rent a car - absolutely essential, public transport is limited
  • Must-do: boat trip in La Maddalena archipelago, nuraghe ancient sites
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Hotel Li Capanni (Costa Smeralda area, pool, excellent value for the region)

    💰 Budget: £100-180/night for hotel, £50-70/day food & drinks

    17. Split, Croatia

Flight time: 2h 25m from London | May temp: 24°C

Split is where I send people who want Croatia but don't want to spend Dubrovnik money. The Diocletian's Palace old town is genuinely spectacular (a Roman emperor's retirement home, now filled with bars and restaurants), the islands are a short ferry away, and May means you can actually enjoy it all.

    What makes May special here:

  • Palace isn't packed - you can actually photograph without crowds
  • Island hopping begins - ferries to Hvar, Brač, Vis running
  • Riviera beaches accessible - stretch along to Omiš and beyond
  • Outdoor restaurant season - dining in the palace courtyards
  • My Split May approach:

  • Stay inside or just outside Diocletian's Palace (yes, you literally sleep in a Roman palace)
  • Take a day trip to Hvar (2h ferry, stunning town, lavender fields)
  • Explore the Makarska Riviera south for quieter beaches
  • Game of Thrones fans: Klis Fortress (Meereen) is a short trip away
  • 📍 Where I stayed: Heritage Hotel Antique Split (inside the palace, unique)

    💰 Budget: £90-140/night for hotel, £35-50/day food & drinks

    Money-saving tips for May:

  • Avoid bank holiday weekends (May 4th, May 25th) - prices spike 20-40%
  • Mid-week flights - Tuesday/Wednesday departures are cheapest
  • Stay outside main tourist zones - Gràcia not Gothic Quarter, Lapad not Dubrovnik walls
  • Book 6-8 weeks ahead - May is popular, good deals go fast

  • Practical Planning Tips

    What to Pack for May

May in the Mediterranean means layering. Days are warm (24-30°C), but evenings can cool down (15-20°C), and coastal breezes add chill.

    My May packing essentials:

  • Light layers (linen shirts, cotton dresses)
  • One warm layer (light cardigan/jumper for evenings)
  • Swimwear (at least 2-3 if you're beach-focused)
  • Comfortable walking shoes (these cities involve cobblestones)
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+ minimum - May sun is stronger than UK bodies expect)
  • Sunglasses and hat
  • Booking Tips

  • Flights: 6-8 weeks ahead for best prices, or last-minute (2-3 weeks) for deals
  • Hotels: Book now for popular destinations (Amalfi, Marrakech riads)
  • Activities: Pre-book anything timed (Alhambra, Sagrada Família, palace tours)
  • Restaurants: Book ahead for famous ones (especially Italy, Spain)
  • Travel Insurance Note

May is low-risk for cancellations (weather stable, airlines running normal schedules), but always have coverage. Check for:

  • Medical coverage (minimum £1m for Europe, £2m elsewhere)
  • Trip cancellation/curtailment
  • Personal belongings (camera, electronics)
  • Activities if you're hiking/diving

  • Dream Trip Integration

When I'm planning a May escape, I save places from all over - TikTok videos, Instagram posts, recommendations from articles like this one. The problem is, those saves scatter across apps and become useless when you're actually packing.

I use Dream Trip to consolidate everything. See a reel of someone swimming in Benagil Cave? Save it, and it automatically extracts the location. Friend recommends a specific taverna in Crete? Add it with the context. By the time I'm ready to book, my trip plan is basically done.

The map view is particularly useful for "where should I actually stay?" questions - my saves cluster into neighbourhoods on the map, so I can pick a base within walking distance of the most pins.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is May warm enough to swim in the Mediterranean?

Yes, but with caveats. Eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Cyprus, Rhodes, Crete) is warmest at 21-23°C - comfortable for most. Western Mediterranean (Barcelona, Amalfi, Algarve) is cooler at 17-19°C - refreshing swims, but not long bathing sessions. Canary Islands are 20°C and reliable.

What about May bank holidays - are prices crazy?

Yes. Early May bank holiday (May 4th, 2026) and late May bank holiday (May 25th, 2026) see flights and hotels spike 20-40%. If you can travel May 10-20th, you'll find the best balance of weather and prices.

Is Ramadan a factor for Morocco in May 2026?

Ramadan 2026 runs roughly March 1 - March 30, so it won't affect May travel. Morocco will be in normal operating mode with everything open as usual.

Which destination has the best nightlife in May?

Barcelona and Bodrum lead for proper clubbing. Split and Seville have excellent bar scenes without mega-clubs. Malta (St Julian's/Paceville) is surprisingly lively. Marrakech has rooftop bars but limited nightlife beyond that.

Can I do a Greek island-hopping trip in May?

Yes! Ferry schedules are running by May. I'd recommend starting with Crete or Rhodes (bigger islands with more infrastructure) and adding smaller islands from there. Athens → Santorini → Crete is a classic route that works well in May.

Is the Amalfi Coast worth it if I'm on a budget?

Honestly, barely. Even in May shoulder season, it's expensive. If budget is a concern, I'd suggest Puglia or Sicily instead - similar vibes, dramatically lower prices. Or do Amalfi as a 2-night splurge within a longer, cheaper Italy trip.

What about crowds at major attractions?

May is shoulder season, so crowds exist but are manageable. My tips:

  • Arrive at opening time for any timed attraction (Alhambra, Sagrada Família, Colosseum)
  • Book in advance for anything popular (Vatican, Anne Frank House, etc.)
  • Go late afternoon for Instagram spots (Santorini sunset crowds are real even in May)
  • Which destination is best for a first solo trip?

Portugal (Algarve or Lisbon/Sintra combo) or Spain (Barcelona, Seville) are excellent starter solo destinations. English is widely spoken, infrastructure is reliable, and solo dining is normal and comfortable. Malta is also great for solo travellers given the English language advantage.

    Final Thoughts

May is genuinely the perfect month to escape the UK. You get summer weather without summer prices, functioning beach scenes without the chaos, and enough warmth to leave the waterproof jacket at home for once.

Looking for more UK-based options? Our best holiday destinations from UK guide covers year-round picks, and weekend getaways UK is perfect for shorter breaks.

My top three for May 2026:

    1. For beaches: Cyprus - warmest sea, guaranteed sun, fascinating history

    2. For culture: Seville - peak timing before it becomes an oven

    3. For all-rounders: Crete - beaches, hiking, food, history in one package

Whatever you choose, book in the next few weeks. May fills up faster than you'd expect, especially around those bank holidays.

    Happy travels! ✈️
