How this travel budget calculator works
Choose a destination, trip length, number of travelers, and travel style. The calculator adds daily accommodation, food, local transport, and activity estimates, then multiplies that amount by your days and travelers. All results are in US dollars, including destinations that use another currency.
These are planning estimates from our destination cost table, not live quotes. Budget, mid-range, and luxury options use different daily allowances. The model treats accommodation as a per-person cost; it does not automatically apply shared-room discounts or child rates.
What is included in the estimate?
Each result includes four daily categories: accommodation, food, local transport, and activities. Use the accommodation line as a starting point for hotels, apartments, hostels, or other nightly stays. Use the transport line for local movement inside the destination, not for flights between countries or cities.
The estimate does not include flights, long-distance trains, visas, travel insurance, resort fees, checked bags, shopping, roaming plans, airport parking, or currency conversion fees. Add those separately before you decide whether a trip fits your budget.
Example budgets for a seven-day trip
One traveler, seven days. These examples are calculated with the same values as the tool above.
| Destination | Budget | Mid-range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paris | $700 | $1,890 | $5,460 |
| Tokyo | $644 | $1,925 | $5,460 |
| Bangkok | $266 | $819 | $2,555 |
How should you use the result?
Treat the total as a planning range, then replace each estimate with a real quote as you book. Start with accommodation, because date, location, room type, and cancellation rules can change the total quickly. Then add transport passes, museum tickets, tours, and restaurant plans for the days you know are expensive.
For two people sharing a room, compare the calculator's combined accommodation allowance with your actual room quote. Keep the food and activity budgets per person, then adjust the total to fit your bookings.
If the estimate feels too high, try fewer nights, a different travel style, or a nearby destination. If it feels too low, add a buffer before you commit to non-refundable flights or hotels.
