The warmest place in Florida in winter is Key West, at the end of the Florida Keys. From November to March it has the highest daily mean of the 16 places compared here, 73.4°F (23.0°C), because its nights stay mild: 68.5°F (20.3°C) on average, against 64.5°F (18.1°C) in Miami and 53.8°F (12.1°C) in Orlando. By day the whole southern tip is level. Miami, Marathon, Fort Myers, Key West, Fort Lauderdale and Naples all average between 78.1°F (25.6°C) and 78.9°F (26.1°C).

So: the Keys for the warmest evenings, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Naples or Fort Myers for the same daytime warmth with cooler nights, and expect Orlando, Tampa and everything further north to be noticeably cooler. Below: 16 places compared on the official climate normals, the answer month by month, and how to choose.

The Warmest Places in Florida, November to March

These figures are NOAA's 1991-2020 US Climate Normals, the official 30-year averages for each weather station, published by the National Centers for Environmental Information (US Climate Normals). There is one station per place, all at airports. For a few of them (Marathon, Fort Lauderdale, Naples, Sarasota, St. Petersburg and Melbourne), NCEI filled gaps in the record from nearby stations; these are still the official figures. "Day high" and "night low" are the average daily maximum and minimum, rain is the average total for the five months, and rainy days are days with 0.10 inch or more. The table is sorted by the daily mean, day and night together. The linked Miami and Orlando weather pages use a different source, a 10-year model average for each area, so their figures differ from these, mostly in night lows and rainfall.

Three things stand out. By day, the south is a tie: the top 6 places by day are within 0.8°F of each other. At night, the Keys win clearly: Key West's nights are 4.0°F milder than Miami's and 9.1°F milder than Naples's. And the north is a different climate: Jacksonville averages 69.9°F (21.1°C) by day and 47.3°F (8.5°C) at night, and Pensacola gets 24.9 in (632 mm) of rain over the winter, against 9.1 in (231 mm) in Key West.

The Warmest Place in Florida, Month by Month

November: Miami, Naples, Fort Myers, Marathon, Key West and Fort Lauderdale are level by day, at 80.8°F (27.1°C) to 81.3°F (27.4°C). Key West has the mildest nights, at 72.2°F (22.3°C).

December: Miami, Marathon, Key West, Fort Lauderdale, Naples and Fort Myers are level by day, at 77.3°F (25.2°C) to 78.2°F (25.7°C). Key West has the mildest nights, at 68.3°F (20.2°C).

January: Miami, Key West, Marathon and Fort Lauderdale are level by day, at 75.6°F (24.2°C) to 76.2°F (24.6°C). Key West has the mildest nights, at 65.5°F (18.6°C).

February: Miami, Marathon, Fort Myers, Key West, Fort Lauderdale and Naples are level by day, at 77.2°F (25.1°C) to 78.2°F (25.7°C). Key West has the mildest nights, at 67.1°F (19.5°C).

Places within 1°F of each other are a tie. These are long-term averages: a cold front can bring a few much cooler days to the whole state in any winter month, and the north feels it most.

January is the coolest month of the year everywhere in the table. Miami still averages 76.2°F (24.6°C) by day and Key West 75.8°F (24.3°C), but the nights split the state: 65.5°F (18.6°C) in Key West, 61.0°F (16.1°C) in Miami, 49.5°F (9.7°C) in Orlando and 40.5°F (4.7°C) in Tallahassee. See Miami weather in January, which also has sea temperatures.

Key West, Miami or the Gulf Coast?

By day the three are close. From November to March Key West averages 78.3°F (25.7°C), Miami 78.9°F (26.1°C) and Naples 78.1°F (25.6°C). The difference is the evenings: Key West's nights average 68.5°F (20.3°C), Miami's 64.5°F (18.1°C) and Naples's 59.4°F (15.2°C). Surrounded by water, the Keys cool down least after sunset. If you plan to eat outside or sit by the pool in the evening, that is the number that matters.

The southwest Gulf coast is the driest of the warm places: Naples averages 7.7 in (195 mm) of rain over the five months, against 12.4 in (315 mm) in Miami and 16.5 in (419 mm) in West Palm Beach, the wettest of the southeast coast stations. Fort Myers is level with Miami by day (78.5°F (25.8°C)) but its nights are cooler, 57.9°F (14.4°C). Orlando, Tampa and Central Florida

Orlando is pleasant rather than warm in winter: 75.5°F (24.2°C) by day and 53.8°F (12.1°C) at night, and 49.5°F (9.7°C) on a January night. That suits theme parks, but plan on a jacket for the evening fireworks. Tampa is similar by day (75.2°F (24.0°C)) with milder nights (56.8°F (13.8°C)), and St. Petersburg, on the water across the bay, has milder nights still (59.7°F (15.4°C)) but cooler days (73.0°F (22.8°C)). Sarasota, a little further south on the Gulf, is warmer by day at 76.2°F (24.6°C).

The months on either side of winter are the warm ones here. In Orlando, March averages 78.9°F (26.1°C) by day and November 78.3°F (25.7°C), against 71.8°F (22.1°C) in January. See Orlando weather in March.

North Florida and the Panhandle

North of Daytona Beach, winter is mild but not warm. Jacksonville averages 69.9°F (21.1°C) by day and 47.3°F (8.5°C) at night, and Tallahassee has the coldest nights in the table, 44.7°F (7.1°C) over the winter and 40.5°F (4.7°C) in January. Pensacola is the wettest place in the table, with 24.9 in (632 mm) of rain on about 30 days from November to March. For beach warmth, the Panhandle is a spring and summer trip rather than a winter one.

How to Choose

  • Warmest overall: Key West, with a daily mean of 73.4°F (23.0°C) from November to March, and Marathon, also in the Keys, close behind.
