The warmest part of Morocco in winter is the south-west, around Agadir. From November to March Agadir averages 22.6°C by day and 10.8°C at night, and Guelmim, inland about 160 km to the south in a straight line, is level by day at 23.0°C. Tan-Tan, further south near the coast, has the mildest nights of the 13 places compared here at 13.2°C. Marrakech is close by day (21.3°C) but colder at night (8.4°C), and the north, from Rabat to Tetouan, is cooler and far wetter.

So for a warm beach holiday, Agadir is the main resort to look at; Dakhla, much further south, is warmer still (more on it below). For a city break, Marrakech has warm afternoons if you pack for cold evenings. Below: 13 places compared on Morocco's official climate averages, the answer month by month, and how to choose.

The Warmest Places in Morocco, November to March

These figures are the World Meteorological Organization's 1991-2020 climate normals for Morocco, the official averages that Morocco's national weather service submitted to the WMO, as archived by the US National Centers for Environmental Information (WMO climate normals). There is one weather station per place. Further south, Dakhla and Laayoune in Western Sahara (a disputed territory, mostly administered by Morocco) are warmer still: Dakhla averages 23.1°C by day and 15.6°C at night from November to March, and Laayoune 24.3°C and 13.5°C. The WMO lists them separately, so they are not in this table. "Day high" and "night low" are the average daily maximum and minimum, rain is the average total for the five months, and rainy days are days with 1 mm or more. The linked weather pages use a different source, a 10-year model average for each resort area, so their figures differ, by up to about 3°C for night lows.

Three things stand out. The south-west is warmest by day: Guelmim and Agadir are within 0.4°C of each other, and near the coast Tan-Tan and Essaouira have the mildest nights. Inland, height decides the nights: Marrakech (464 m) averages 8.4°C after dark, and Ouarzazate (1,136 m) 5.0°C. And Ifrane, in the Middle Atlas at 1,663 m, is a different climate altogether: 11.3°C by day and below freezing on about 63 nights over the winter.

The Warmest Place in Morocco, Month by Month

November: Guelmim is the warmest place in the table by day, at 24.9°C. Tan-Tan has the mildest nights, at 15.0°C.

December: Agadir, Guelmim and Tan-Tan are the warmest places in the table by day, level at 21.7°C to 22.1°C. Tan-Tan has the mildest nights, at 12.9°C.

January: Agadir and Guelmim are the warmest places in the table by day, level at 20.9°C to 21.2°C. Tan-Tan has the mildest nights, at 11.7°C.

February: Guelmim and Agadir are the warmest places in the table by day, level at 22.0°C to 22.4°C. Tan-Tan has the mildest nights, at 12.5°C.

A note on the stations: places within half a degree of each other are a tie. A sheltered courtyard or a south-facing beach can feel warmer at midday than any of these numbers, and a desert night colder.

Agadir and the South-West Coast

Agadir is the warmest of Morocco's main beach resorts in winter. It averages 22.6°C by day from November to March, and its day highs never average below 21.2°C in any winter month. It has about 35 days of 25°C or more over the five months. Rain falls on about 15 days in the whole winter, 183 mm in total, and December is its wettest month of the year.

Guelmim matches Agadir by day and is warmer in November and March (24.9°C in both), but it is an inland market town at 300 m, not a beach resort. Tan-Tan, about 260 km south of Agadir in a straight line and near the coast, has the mildest nights in the table (13.2°C) and only 72 mm of rain all winter.

Essaouira, about 130 km up the coast in a straight line, is milder at night than Agadir (12.7°C) but cooler by day (19.3°C), with only about 5 days of 25°C or more all winter.

Marrakech: Warm Days, Cold Nights

Marrakech averages 21.3°C by day from November to March, only about 1.3°C behind Agadir, but its nights average 8.4°C, and in January 5.9°C. By March it is as warm by day as Agadir (23.6°C against 23.4°C), with about 13 days of 25°C or more, which makes March the warmest month of its winter. See Marrakech weather in December and our 3 days in Marrakech itinerary.

The Desert Side: Ouarzazate and Errachidia

South of the High Atlas, Ouarzazate (1,136 m) and Errachidia (1,037 m), the town on the road towards the Sahara dunes at Merzouga, are the driest places in the table: 54 mm and 61 mm of rain over the five months, against 183 mm in Agadir. Their days are mild (19.7°C and 18.7°C), but their nights are the coldest in the table outside the Middle Atlas: in January Ouarzazate averages 1.8°C at night and drops below freezing on about 8 nights. If a desert night is on your plan, pack for frost.

Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and the North

The north is cooler, and Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Tetouan are much wetter. Casablanca and Rabat both average 19.1°C by day, with 301 mm and 389 mm of rain over the winter. Fes, inland (its weather station is at 571 m), has cool days (18.1°C) and cold nights (5.6°C), with about 8 frosty nights over the winter. Tetouan, near the Mediterranean coast, is the wettest lowland place in the table: 446 mm over the five months on about 39 days. Only Ifrane, in the mountains, is wetter (635 mm).

How to Choose

  • Warmest main beach resort: Agadir, 22.6°C by day from November to March. Dakhla, in Western Sahara, is warmer still.
  • Mildest nights in the table: Tan-Tan, at 13.2°C, then Essaouira.
  • Driest: Ouarzazate, with 54 mm from November to March; pack for cold nights.
  • City break: Marrakech, best in November or March, with layers for the evenings.
  • Avoid if you want warmth: the Middle Atlas, where Ifrane's January nights average -1.0°C, and the rainy north in December and January.
