How to save places on Google Maps

- Search for a place, tap a marker, or touch and hold a spot on the map.
- At the bottom of the screen, tap the place's name or address.
- Tap Save.
- Pick an existing list, or tap New list to make one.
On a computer
- Open Google Maps in your browser and sign in.
- Search for a place or click it on the map.
- Click Save.
- Choose a list, or click New list, give it a name and click Create.
Google notes that only you can find your saved places unless you create and share a list (Save favorite places). Each list holds up to 3,000 places; lists bigger than that may not display properly.
How to make a list in Google Maps
Make one list per trip. "Tokyo, April" is far easier to use on the ground than a single "Want to go" list with 400 pins from ten countries.
iPhone and iPad

Where to find your saved places and lists
In the app, tap You (or Saved, depending on your version) at the bottom of the screen and scroll to your lists. You will also see Recently saved, which shows places you saved in the last few months, and Nearby saved, which shows saved places within about 25 km (16 mi) of you (Google Maps Help). Nearby saved is handy on a trip: open it wherever you are to see what you saved close by.

How to share a Google Maps list
Share a view-only link
- iPhone and iPad: tap You, then next to the list tap More and Share list.

Let friends add places too
If you are planning a trip with other people, make the list collaborative so everyone adds to one list instead of sending links in a group chat.
- iPhone, iPad and Android: tap You, find the list, and tap Invite collaborators. To manage it later, tap More, then Sharing options, then Invite editors.
- Computer: click Saved, then next to the list click More, Invite to edit, Get a link, and copy the link.
To stop others from editing, open Sharing options and turn off Let others edit the list. Anyone who can view the list can see the names and profile pictures of people who joined it, and who added or edited places and notes.
One catch: on a computer, Google says you cannot share starred places. If your saves are in Starred places, move them into a named list first.
Save a list someone shared with you
Open the link and tap Save list on your phone, or click Follow on a computer. The places appear on your map and under your saved lists.
How to plan a trip on Google Maps
Google Maps lists do not have days or times, but lists plus directions get you a decent rough plan. Here is a workflow that uses only built-in features.
- Make a list for the trip. One city, one list.
- Save everything you might want to do. Restaurants, sights, the hotel, the train station.
- Add notes. Open the list, choose a place, and tap Add a note about this place. Notes can be up to 4,000 characters, so there is room for "order the vermouth" or "book two weeks ahead".
- Look at the list on the map. Clusters of pins show you which places belong on the same day.
- Reorder the list (Android). Open the list, tap Edit, turn on Customize list order, and drag places into the order you want to visit them.
- Build each day's route. Start directions to your first stop, then tap More and Edit stops to add more. You can add up to 9 stops including the final destination, for every travel mode except public transit and flights (Get directions).
- Share the list with whoever is coming.
That is enough for a weekend. It gets harder with a longer trip: a list has no concept of day one and day two, directions stop at nine stops, and you do the geography by eye.
Export your saved lists
If you ever want your lists out of Google Maps, go to Google Takeout, make sure Saved is checked, and create an export.
The step Google Maps cannot do: places from videos
A lot of travel ideas now arrive as TikToks and Reels, not searches. Google Maps saves places, not videos, so every saved video turns into manual work: watch it, pause it to read a sign, guess the spelling, search, pick the right branch, save. For five places that is fine. For fifty it tends not to happen.
